The Essential Reykjavik
REYKJAVIK CITY TOUR
On this tour of the world's northernmost capital we will visit all the major landmarks of Reykjavík.
Included are stops at the beautiful Perlan (Pearl) building which is built on top of the six water tanks which used to hold the city's hot water supply. Another stop is the Hallgrímskirkja church which dominates the skyline in the city center. The church was designed by then state architect, Gudjon Samuelsson, who often sought his inspiration in Icelandic nature and legends. A visit to the 74.5m (244 ft) tower is recommended (fee for tower not included) as the view from there is unparalleled in Reykjavik.
We will also visit the Höfði house, famous for hosting the 1986 summit between former US President Ronald Reagan and former USSR General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev.
A mandatory stop is also the Harpa Concert Hall, opened as recently as 2011, which has quickly become an icon of the city. The building's architecture is amazing and inspired by the Icelandic nature. We will also stop for photos at the Sólfarið (The Sun Voyager) sculpture.
In addition to all this we will also drive by, even stop at, the city center with the Parliament (Althingi) building, City Hall, the Old Harbour, the Catholic Church and the Reykjavik Pond with its diverse birdlife.
Optional stops might include The Presidential Residence at Bessastadir, built between 1761 and 1766, the Einar Jónsson sculpture garden and even the Reykjavik Botanical Garden.
